What makes a fuel injected car flooded
Skip to content This is a question that many people ask themselves when they are trying to figure out how to start their car. What causes a flood in a fuel-injected engine? Is it possible to start a flooded engine with starting fluid? When a throttle body floods, what causes it to do so? How can I keep my engine from overheating? Set it aside for a bit to allow the fuel to dissipate. Start the engine by placing your foot squarely on the floor. What is the best way to start a flooded fuel injected engine?
Is an automobile ruined by flood damage? How can I tell if my engine has been flooded? The car either does not start or starts momentarily before cutting off. This happens when there is a disproportionate mixture of fuel and air and will typically occur when you hit the gas too hard or pump the accelerator too much when starting your car.
Vehicles that employ fuel injection like the Toyota Camry will see this happen most often when in extreme cold. When you turn the ignition and your vehicle fails to turn over, it can be a strong indicator that your engine may be flooded. If you cannot hear your engine starting to turn over or it is completely dead and accompanied by a strong gasoline scent, chances are you have flooded your engine.
Perhaps the best remedy for a flooded engine is time. Simply open the hood of your car and let excessive fuel evaporate for as long as you can. One more benefit of this procedure is that, once the spark plugs are out, the excessive fuel in the cylinder will evaporate more quickly and increase the chances for an easier start. More on the spark plug topic in a separate article which you can read by clicking here.
This will eliminate any leftover residue on the spark plugs as well as enable the ECU to read new information if some repair was done. With carburetors, this is also an option. Leave the car for about an hour and then try starting it. It may work if the flooded engine is caused accidentally by the driver. If something else is wrong, it may not help. Pretty much a routine procedure and if you have even the slightest knowledge around car repairing, you should be able to do it.
While the spark plugs are out, fuel will evaporate from the cylinders making it much easier to start the engine. The choke is a valve installed inside the carburetor. Its main purpose is to make a cold engine start easier. That opens the throttle and, to some extent, the choke , and sends in as much air as possible. TOM: On a fuel injected car, you also floor the gas pedal while turning the key.
But what you're doing is sending a message to the computer which controls the fuel-air mixture. When you press the gas pedal to the floor in the "crank mode" when the engine is trying to start , you let the computer know that the engine is flooded, and the computer automatically cuts the fuel flow in half. RAY: These methods will work if the engine is slightly flooded.
